Testing for it is quick and painless, and it can be treated with a course of antibiotics
Genital warts are caused by HPV. There are over 100 different types of HPV, some of which you can be vaccinated against. Warts are usually not painful and are not a serious threat to your health.
Gonorrhoea is caused by bacteria that live in warm, moist parts of the body such as the throat, rectum, penis and vagina. Left untreated, gonorrhoea can cause infertility in both men and women. Gonorrhoea is also found in infected semen.
Herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It’s spread through skin-to-skin contact – for example during vaginal, oral or anal sex. The herpes simplex virus remains in the body for life, but it stays inactive most of the time.
LGV stands for lymphogranuloma venereum. It’s a type of chlamydia bacteria that attacks the lymph nodes, which are an important part of your body’s defence against infections.
LGV is very rarely seen in heterosexual men and women in the UK but cases are being seen among gay and bisexual men.
Hepatitis (sometimes shortened to hep) is an inflammation of the liver. This large organ is on the right side of your body and has many functions, including turning your food into energy and filtering toxins such as alcohol out of your blood.
Mycoplasma genitalium is also known as MG or Mgen. It’s a sexually transmitted bacterium that infects the urinary and genital tracts of men and women.
MG can cause non-specific urethritis (NSU) in men and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women.
Molluscum is a viral skin infection caused by the virus molluscum contagiosum. It spreads by close physical contact, including sexual contact. It can also be passed on by sharing objects like towels or flannels.

It’s also known as non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) when not caused by gonorrhoea.

Shigella is a type of bacteria that causes severe stomach upset. Infection can be treated with a course of antibiotics. It’s passed on through infected faeces (poo), either sexually or through contaminated food.
Syphilis is caused by bacteria. It’s an infection that spreads easily through anal, vaginal and oral sex and can seriously damage your heart, brain and nervous system. It’s easy to treat and cure with antibiotics.
Mpox, formerly called monkeypox, is an uncommon viral disease most commonly passed on through contact with the blisters or lesions of someone who has mpox. It belongs to the same viral family as the variola virus, causing smallpox. In 2022 and 2023, an mpox outbreak was recorded in the MSM population worldwide. Currently, mpox is considered rare, although the outbreak may return.
